The Truce

Violent conflicts go through stages of escalation and decline. Violence can spread, involving more and more people and intensifying in frequency and force. Conversely, conflicts can ease, as the scope of participation narrows and the level of intensity lessens. Of course, conflict in itself is not necessarily always negative; a great deal of social progress has been direct outcome of conflict, much like the social struggles during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. An approach that takes account of the role of meaning and social identity can lead us to more effective solutions in our attempts to intervene in conflicts so that we can minimize the reification of racial divisions and unnecessary hardships. Realize most hatred is unnecessary, jealousy is a female trait.

The Saturnalia

Don’t flatter yourself that friendship authorizes you to say disagreeable things to your intimates. The nearer you come into relation with a person, the more necessary do tact and courtesy become. Except in cases of necessity, which are rare, leave your friend to learn unpleasant things from his enemies; they are ready enough to tell them.

– Oliver Wendell Holmes

In Folks We Trust

Folks – The people of a society or region considered as the representatives of a traditional way of life; and especially as the originaters and carriers of the customs, beliefs, and the arts that make up a distinctive culture.

In the last decade, the number of kids doing time in adult prisons has tripled, even though the juvenile system was originally established to keep them out of the adult system.

From award-winning documentary filmaker Leslie Neale (Road to Return) come Juvies – a stark insight into the personal stories of twelve kids being prosecuted and imprisoned as adults. Juvies gets inside the lives of these kids who face a life of incarceration haunted by mistakes and missed opportunities.

A friend gave me this documentary today and ironically I received a letter in the mail from my younger brother, who’s in juvenile hall, the same day. But anyways I suggest others to get themselves a copy of this film.

Communities are the locations and institutions where racial ideologies crystallize. Racial beliefs are community constructions, and racial actions are community activities… The community is the nexus where the societal forces combine with the individual factors to influence ethnic and racial attitudes and behavior.

The Dream

When we wake up in the morning, the night’s dream dissolves, and we say, “Oh, it was only a dream. It wasn’t real.” But something in the dream must have been real otherwise it could not be. When death approaches, we may look back on our life and wonder if it was just another dream. Even now you may look back on last year’s vacation or yesterday’s drama and see that it is very similar to last night’s dream.
